Concrete NZ - Readymix Sector Group

About the Group

The Readymix Sector Group strives to research, develop, promote and protect the interests of the ready mixed concrete industry by implementing a range of targeted initiatives.

The Group's areas of activity include ensuring members achieve and maintain a high standard of quality control, representing the industry before Government and its agencies, procuring and disseminating technical information, as well as participating in Standards development.

The Group's Member's can choose to have their concrete plants audited by the Plant Audit Scheme as defined in NZS 3104:2003 Specification for Concrete Production. The Scheme provides a rigorous audit of the quality systems in place at a ready mixed concrete plant.

Plant Audit Scheme

The Plant Audit Scheme provides a thorough audit of a ready mixed concrete plant's own quality system.

Audits are carried out by the Plant Audit Committee of five or more registered engineers. The committee is resourced to conduct reviews to a high and consistent standard throughout New Zealand.

The Scheme's operations are carried out under a quality assurance programme certified to ISO 9001 and audited by Bureau Veritas (NZ) Ltd. Ownership of the Scheme has recently been transferred to Concrete NZ from the NZ Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NZRMCA).

Health & Safety

The Health & Safety At Work Act came into force on 4 April 2016, meaning there is now a greater accountability for businesses and individuals, and a greater requirement for everyone (including contractors) on site to work together to stay safe.

The Readymix Sector Group is committed to assisting Members improve their H&S practices, and has taken the lead for Concrete NZ by preparing resources targeting this important area.

Subjects covered include managing blowback, cement silo safety, concrete truck bowl retaining mechanisms, concrete truck driver hand signals and traffic management when delivering to site.

Concrete Production

Statistics New Zealand (NZ) has been gathering ready mixed concrete production data as an indicator of construction and economic activity since the early 1990s.

The data is presented quarterly across eight 'regions' from which ‘national’ figures are calculated. Data is also presented for the three 'metropolitan' areas of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Concrete production figures should be read along with Building Consents Issued and Value of Building Work Put in Place data, also available from Statistics NZ. The annual National Construction Pipeline Report is another useful resource.

NZS 3104:2021 Revision

Standards New Zealand and Concrete NZ worked in partnership to publish NZS 3104:2021 Specification for Concrete Production.

The Standard prescribes the minimum requirements for the production of fresh concrete, and supersedes the 2003 revision of the original 1983 Standard.

The revision has been designed to meet an identified industry need and will allow users to follow up-to-date and recognised good practice methods, and provides a modern, safer compliance document to enable nationally consistent concrete production.
