A Bay of Plenty precast concrete yard team leader has been crowned the 2024 Concrete Industry Apprentice of the Year, standing out for his exceptional leadership, technical ability, and passion for the concrete industry.

Naziah Quinn of HEB Construction, 2024 Concrete Industry Apprentice of the Year
Naziah Quinn, a foreman from HEB Construction in Te Puke, claimed a portion of the $10,000 prize pool for his attitude and achievements, including his involvement with the Tauranga Northern Link project - now Stage One of Takitimu North Link (TNL).
Naziah is progressing through his apprenticeship, aiming for completion by the end of 2024. With close to nine years of precast concrete experience, Naziah enrolled in the apprenticeship to gain formal recognition for the extensive experience he has accumulated
over the years.
His career journey began in 2007 as a steel fixer, where he was captivated by the intricate, detail-oriented nature of reinforcing work. “Straight away, I was addicted to how labour-intensive it was, turning drawings into real-world results,” says Naziah.
Problem-solving abilities and a drive for precision have defined Naziah’s career thus far. “My strengths lie in the thought of perfection, I'm always chasing that thought, and seeing something I've built or been a part of, talked about in high regard
makes me proud."

LEADERSHIP AND TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY Naziah’s recent work includes constructing Super T beams and Unispan deck panels for TNL’s Minden Gully Bridge, where he has consistently led by example. His knowledge and experience now cover
every stage of the precast process, including mould setup, reinforcing steel preparation, strand installation and tensioning, quality assurance checks, pouring and finishing concrete, de-moulding, curing, and final loadouts.
Concrete NZ Chief Executive Rob Gaimster praised Quinn for exemplifying the ambition and dedication celebrated by the Concrete Industry Apprentice of the Year award.
“The building and construction sector is a vital part of New Zealand’s economy, and apprentices like Naziah play a crucial role in driving both productivity and quality,” says Gaimster.
“His achievements reflect the opportunities available in the concrete industry for those who are committed to personal and professional growth.”
BCITO Training Advisor Sam Thomson commended Naziah for his hands-on guidance and dedication. “Naziah has consistently impressed me with his preparation and professionalism,” says Thomson.
“He excels in providing detailed supporting information for assessments and plays a key role in maintaining a safe and efficient worksite. From ensuring pre-start documentation is completed to checking his team’s PPE and equipment, Naziah leads by example.”

“This is a transformative time for our industry. Alongside sustainability goals, we’re fostering diversity, health and safety, and the recognition of exceptional performers like Naziah,” says Gaimster.
Naziah’s commitment shone through. “His leadership skills are outstanding in what is a challenging role, leading a team of steel fixers whose cultural backgrounds are diverse,” says Gareth Cole, Naziah’s supervisor at HEB Construction.
When asked about the Concrete Industry Apprentice of the Year, BCITO Director, Greg Durkin, said, “The construction industry thrives because of the passion, skill, and leadership demonstrated by apprentices like Naziah and his employer, HEB Construction.
Naziah’s dedication to master the precast concrete process and ability to guide his team through complex projects reflects the highest standards of our profession.”
