A new version of AS/NZS 4671 Steel for the Reinforcement of Concrete was published in December 2019, and can be purchased from the Standards New Zealand website.

This new version maintains the existing steel grades while increasing clarity around product conformity requirements.

The revised Standard also incorporates the majority of requirements developed for ductile steel mesh that are included in Section 14 of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) compliance document Acceptable Solutions and Verification Methods For New Zealand Building Code Clause B1 Structure.

Concrete NZ has written to the building regulator to inform them that the new version of AS/NZS 4671:2019 has been published and recommended that this version be included in a future New Zealand Building Code update consultation – amending by modification the content of NZS 3101 Concrete Structures Standard to cite the new version of AS/NZS 4671:2019 (replacing the current citation of AS/NZS 4671:2001) in the Building Code System.

It is to be noted that AS/NZS 4671 is also cited in other primary referenced standards including NZS 3604 Timber-Framed Buildings, NZS 4229 Concrete Masonry Buildings Not Requiring Specific Engineering Design and NZS 4230 Design of Reinforced Concrete Masonry Structures.

The citation of these Standards will also need to be modified to cite AS/NZS 4671:2019.

The proposed modification for primary Standards to cite the new version of AS/NZS 4671 is expected to be consulted on in the second half of 2020. The modification, if supported, is likely to come into effect from December 2020 with a transition period to allow designs to conform with either the 2001 or the 2019 versions of AS/NZS 4671. The duration of the transition period is still to be confirmed and will take into account industry feedback.
